Agentic Media Buying
Applies to: Publishers · Ad manager setups
What this is#
Agentic Media Buying is for ad zones that you fill by buying traffic on another ad network — ExoClick, Adsterra and others. You run a campaign at that network, it sends visitors to your ad zone, and the campaigns on your zone earn from them.
Once the zone is connected to that network campaign, the External Source tab of the zone shows an Agentic Media Buying section. It tells you, per source zone of the network (the network's own zone, placement, site or spot the visitor came from), what you earned and what it cost — and lets you act on it:
- block a losing source zone at the network with one click, or buy only your best zones (allow-list);
- have the network campaign paused automatically when your campaigns cannot use more traffic, when a daily spend cap is reached, or when the day's loss gets too big;
- read and change the bid of the network campaign;
- let a buying policy and a buying agent propose blocks and bid changes for you — you approve them, or let them act within limits you set.
When you'll use this#
- You buy traffic on an external network and want to know which of its zones make money.
- You want to stop paying for zones that never convert, without pausing the whole campaign.
- You want to stop buying traffic before your campaigns' day budgets run out, instead of after.
- You want a daily review of the buy without opening the network's own panel.
Step by step#
1. Connect your network account#
Open the Ad Networks page and add your account at the traffic network with its API key (for Adsterra: in the Adsterra advertiser panel, Settings → API → Generate new token). One account can serve several ad zones.
2. Connect the ad zone to the network campaign#
Open the ad zone, tab External Source:
- Ad network — choose the account from step 1.
- External campaign ID — the id of the campaign at the network that sends traffic to this zone.
- Auto pause/activate the source campaign via the network API — leave it on: the network campaign is paused and resumed automatically to match your campaigns.
- Click Save binding.
The Agentic Media Buying section appears under the form.
Or: launch the campaign from here (Adsterra, ExoClick, our own networks)#
No campaign at the network yet? On a pop ad zone that is not connected, Launch a campaign at the network creates it for you through the network's API:
- Click Prepare a campaign. The form comes filled in from the ad zone: the landing URL with the network's macros already in it, the countries your campaigns target with a suggested bid per country (what your campaigns earn per 1000 visits there, less the target margin), the devices, a daily budget and the frequency cap.
- Check every field — change the bids or the budget, add or remove countries, and optionally start with the blocked placements of another of your buying zones.
- Click Send to the network for review. The network's moderation checks the campaign; the status shows Waiting for the network's review.
- Once approved, the campaign is connected to this ad zone automatically and the Agentic Media Buying section appears. It is created switched off and the ad server switches it on as soon as your campaigns can take traffic.
If the network declines it, the reason is shown and you can prepare a new one. Adsterra, ExoClick and our own networks create only Popunder campaigns from here; for other formats and networks, create the campaign in the network's panel and connect it with steps 1–3 below.
On our own networks (another tenant of this platform) the campaign is created at once with a bid per country, switched off. Pop and redirect ad zones get a new campaign; any other format (banner, native, video, push…) starts from a copy of one of your campaigns there of the same format, with its ads and creatives, which are pointed at this ad zone. You can also pick such a campaign to start from for a pop or redirect zone. It counts as approved as soon as the network has accepted its landing page; until then the status shows what it waits for.
On ExoClick two things differ: a campaign has one bid for every country, so the lowest bid in the table is used for all of them (the bidding rules raise it from there), and ExoClick reviews a campaign only once it runs — a campaign created switched off is connected to the ad zone straight away and reviewed when the ad server first switches it on.
3. Pass the source zone on the URL#
The network has to tell us which of its zones each visitor came from. Source zone capture shows the exact text to add to the URL of your campaign at the network, with a Copy button — for example &sid6=##PLACEMENT_ID## for Adsterra or &sid6={zone_id} for ExoClick. Add it once at the network; from then on every visit carries its source zone.
4. Read the source zone report#
After a day of traffic, Source zones lists every zone the network sent visitors from, with traffic, conversions, Revenue, Cost, Profit, Margin and CPA. Pick the period at the top right; tick Losing only to see just the zones that cost more than they earned.
Delivered shows which share of the visitors the network counted — and charged you for — actually reached your zone. Pop and push traffic always lose a few; a zone far below the others sends traffic that never arrives, and Block below delivery (%) in the policy can block such zones automatically.
Off-geo shows which share of a zone's visitors came from outside the countries your network campaign buys. The network charges those visits as its target country, but your campaigns cannot use them — often they are scanners and cloud servers opening the page. Below the table you see the average for the whole buy; a zone far above it can be blocked automatically with Block above off-geo (%) in the policy.
A cost marked with * is an estimate: some networks only report the cost of the whole campaign, so it is split over the zones by their share of the traffic. Networks that report cost per zone show the exact figure.
5. Block or allow-list zones#
- Block on a row stops buying that zone at the network. Unblock undoes it.
- Zone targeting → Build allow-list turns it around: the campaign buys only the zones you tick (we suggest the profitable ones). Back to all zones returns to buying everything except the blocked zones.
When the advertiser blocks a subid#
If your ad zone sends its traffic to one single campaign and the network passes its source zone as subid, every subid that campaign's advertiser blocks is blocked at the network as well — nobody else could use that traffic, so buying it would be pure cost. When the advertiser lifts the block, it is lifted at the network too. The setting is Apply the advertiser's subid blocks at the network under Buying policy (on by default); these blocks show in Actions → History as Advertiser block.
Copying a buying zone (for example for another country)#
When you Duplicate an ad zone that buys traffic, two extra options appear: Copy the buying policy (same modes, limits and agent instructions) and Carry over the blocked placements — all of them, or only those blocked for traffic quality (visitors that never arrived, bots, sources the advertiser refused). The network connection itself is never copied: connect the new zone to its own network campaign, and at that moment the carried-over placements are added to that campaign's blacklist.
Why did it do that? The activity log#
Everything the policy, the agent, the advertiser-block mirror or a person does is listed under Activity → History: when, who, what, which placement, whether it was applied, and why — the rule and its numbers, for example margin 7.7% below target 15.0% (3 days) or 38% of visitors outside the campaign's countries (GH), above 30%. Filter it by placement / subid, by who and by action, and use Download CSV to take the same selection into a spreadsheet. In Source zones, every blocked placement also shows who blocked it, when and why, right under its id. The Buying agent box keeps each review: its summary, and which of its proposals the policy limits dropped and why.
6. Set the buying policy#
Agentic Media Buying is off on every ad zone until you switch it on. While it is off you can see the source zones and their cost and block a zone yourself, but nothing happens automatically. Click Switch on in the card at the top of the section to let the settings below work; Switch off stops everything again at once. If your platform charges for Agentic Media Buying, the charge is based on the network spend of the ad zones you have switched on; the report and blocking by hand are never charged. Account → Billing shows this month's charge projected to month end.
The first time you switch a zone on, it starts with settings suggested from its own traffic, everything in Advise so it only proposes. A new source is checked every hour from the start on today's traffic, because a lot can happen in the first hours; a source with a few days of history is judged on three days. Under Automation, Suggest settings shows the suggestion again any time, each setting with the reason behind it, and Use these settings puts them in the form for you to save.
Under Buying policy, choose what may happen without you:
- Mode — Off, Advise (blocks are proposed for your approval) or Auto (blocks are carried out within the daily maximum).
- The limits — margin, CPA, minimum cost and traffic before a zone is judged.
- Source controls — day budget reserve, minimum minutes between switches, daily spend cap and stop-loss.
- Bidding and Buying agent — see the options reference.
Click Save policy. Start on Advise: proposals appear under Actions → To approve, where you Approve or Reject each one.
7. Network budget and segments (Adsterra, ExoClick, our own networks)#
Two more rows under What runs on its own act on the network campaign as a whole:
- Network budget — sets the campaign's daily budget at the network, so the network itself stops once your campaigns have had enough. The target is the day budgets of the campaigns on this zone × what the network charged per unit of your revenue over the policy window, plus the Headroom. It is decided once a day, shortly after midnight, and only changed when it moves more than 10%. Nothing is set while one of those campaigns has no day budget. Read from network shows the current budget and the target with the figures behind it.
- Segments — the Segments tab sets your revenue per country, operating system and hour of day against what the network charged for exactly that segment. A segment with at least the minimum cost and a margin under the target is proposed for exclusion; one that carries more than half of the cost never is.
- ExoClick shows the campaign's current targeting, so an approved exclusion is written at the network: the campaign's targeting is read first and only that country, operating system or hour changes. In Auto the system writes them itself. A country can only be removed from a campaign that targets a list of countries — ExoClick cannot exclude one from a campaign that buys every country.
- On our own networks (another tenant of this platform) an approved exclusion is written too: a country is taken out of the campaign's targeted regions, an operating system out of its OS list, an hour out of its day parting. As at ExoClick, a country can only be removed from a campaign that targets a list of countries.
- Adsterra's API does not show the campaign's current country, OS and time targeting, so a change from here could overwrite what is set there: these proposals are applied by you at the network — click Done at network once you have.
The network campaign is changed at most once a day, and never between 18:00 and midnight: a change can send it back into review at the network. If that happens it shows as Failed with the reason, and it is not retried that day.
8. IP preblock (ExoClick, TrafficStars, our own networks)#
Some visitors are known not to be people: mail link checkers, Google and Meta servers opening your pages, data centres. IP preblock sends the network a list of IP ranges not to buy for this campaign at all, so you stop paying for them before any placement has to be blocked.
- The list comes from known scanner ranges and from the networks whose visits to this ad zone our ad server flags as not human. Only the address blocks that actually reached this zone are listed.
- A range that brought a conversion is never listed, and neither are ranges known to carry real people (such as iCloud Private Relay).
- Advise shows the ranges under IP preblock for you to Block or Reject; Auto sends them to the network. Build the list now builds it without waiting for the daily run.
- You can add an IP address or range by hand; it is blocked right away.
- A range not seen again for the set number of days is taken off. Ranges you put on the network's list yourself are never touched.
- ExoClick takes IPv4 ranges only; TrafficStars takes IPv4 and IPv6. On Adsterra this is not available yet.
9. Reports by email, Telegram or Slack#
Under Automation, Report sends a short summary of the ad zone daily at 08:00 (yesterday) or weekly on Monday at 08:00 (the last 7 days): revenue, cost, profit and margin against the period before, what was blocked or changed, what waits for your approval, the placements still losing money, the best earners and the buying agent's last summary, with a link back here. Send now sends one right away. Each report is logged in the activity log.
The report goes to your account email and to your webhooks and event feed (event media_buying.report), and to the network's admins as they set it in their notification settings.
Options reference#
Connection and source#
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Ad network | The network account the zone buys on. |
| External campaign ID | The campaign at that network. |
| Auto pause/activate the source campaign via the network API | The network campaign is paused when your campaigns on this zone cannot take traffic, and resumed when they can. Leave it on: there is no mode in which the network campaign is never changed. |
| Retry (Source campaign) | Shown when the network refused 10 calls in a row (often an expired API key). Fix the cause, then retry. |
Buying policy#
| Field | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Mode | Off | Off / Advise / Auto for zone blocks. |
| Apply the advertiser's subid blocks at the network | Off | One campaign on the zone + source id in subid: the advertiser's subid blocks are blocked at the network too. |
| Revenue measured as | Advertiser spend | What counts as revenue: what the campaigns on the zone paid, or what the zone earned. |
| Window (days) | 3 | How many days a zone is judged on. |
| Block below margin (%) | 0 | Margin = (revenue − cost) / revenue. 0 blocks zones that lose money. Empty = not used. |
| Block above CPA | empty | Cost per conversion. A zone without conversions is blocked once its cost reaches this. |
| How margin and CPA are judged | Fixed | Fixed blocks a zone as soon as it misses the margin or CPA after the minimum cost and traffic. Confidence blocks only when the system is sure the zone is bad. Use it for campaigns paid per conversion or click: a zone that has not converted yet gets enough time to show it can. |
| Block when sure (%) | 90 | Confidence only. Higher waits for more proof. |
| Compare small zones with | Same country | Confidence only. A zone with little data is judged partly on similar zones: zones from the same country, all zones of the buy, or nothing. |
| Report | Off (suggested: daily) | Daily (08:00) or weekly (Monday 08:00) summary by email / Telegram / Slack; see step 9. |
| Count conversions on | The day the conversion arrives | For campaigns paid per conversion: the day of the visit that led to it gives each placement the revenue its own traffic earned, and its last days include the conversions it usually still gets later. Needs the source id in subid; recorded from 13 October 2026. |
| Weight of the group | 2 | How many paid conversions (or clicks) the group counts as. 0 switches the comparison off. |
| Minimum cost before judging | 5 | A zone is never judged on less cost than this… |
| Minimum traffic before judging | 200 | …nor on less traffic (clicks or impressions, per ad type). |
| Maximum automatic blocks per day | 20 | Auto mode stops here for the day; the rest is proposed. |
| Block below delivery (%) | empty | Delivered = visitors that reached the zone out of what the network counted (and charged). Blocks zones far below the rest. ExoClick and Adsterra only. |
| Minimum network count before judging delivery | 300 | The network's impressions (or clicks) a zone needs before its delivery is judged. |
| Block above off-geo (%) | empty | Off-geo = visitors from outside the countries the network campaign buys. Blocks zones above this share. The countries are read from the network campaign (Adsterra, ExoClick), else from your linked campaigns. |
| Minimum traffic before judging geo | 200 | Visitors (or clicks) a zone needs before its off-geo share is judged. |
| IP preblock | Off | Off / Advise / Auto for the IP exclusion list (ExoClick, TrafficStars, our own networks). |
| Also block data centres and VPNs | Off | Adds hosting and VPN ranges. Some real visitors use a VPN. |
| Maximum ranges on the list | 200 | The ranges with the most visits go first. |
| Take a range off after (days unseen) | 30 | A range not seen on this buy for this long is taken off the list. |
| Day budget reserve (%) | 0 | Stop buying when a campaign has less than this share of today's budget left. |
| Minimum minutes between switches | 0 | After a pause or resume, the network campaign is not resumed again within this time. Pausing is never delayed. |
| Daily source spend cap | empty | Pause the network campaign once today's cost at the network reaches this. |
| Daily stop-loss | empty | Pause it once today's loss on the zone reaches this. |
| Bid mode | Off | Off / Advise / Auto for bid changes. |
| Step per change (%) | 10 | Size of one bid change. |
| Margin band (points) | 10 | No bid change while the margin is this close to the target. |
| Minimum window cost before changing | 20 | No bid change on less cost than this. |
| Minimum bid / Maximum bid | empty | Bounds, in the network's own bid unit. Without a maximum the bid is never raised. |
| Hours between changes | 6 | At most one bid change per this many hours — and at most one bid change per placement in that time. |
| Bid per placement | Off | Off / Advise / Auto for each placement's own bid (Adsterra; ExoClick only while the campaign buys from an allow-list — ExoClick has one bid per placement for every country). A placement that makes the target margin, but only just, gets a lower bid before it would have to be blocked; a clear winner gets a higher one while your campaigns can take more traffic. Judged on the same minimum cost and traffic as blocking; Auto applies at most the Maximum automatic blocks per day. |
| Step per change (%) (Bid per placement) | 10 | Size of one placement bid change. |
| Lower within (points above the target) | 15 | Margin from the target up to this many points above it: lower the bid. Twice this many points above the target or more: raise it. |
| Lowest bid (% of the base bid) | 50 | A placement's bid never goes below this share of the campaign's own bid for that country. |
| Highest bid (% of the base bid) | 150 | …and never above this share. |
| Agent mode | Off | Off / Advise / Auto for the buying agent. |
| Review interval | every 24 h | How often the agent reviews the buy: every 15 min up to every 24 h, or Automatic — every 15 minutes from 50,000 visitors a day, every 30 minutes from 10,000, hourly from 2,000, otherwise every 4 hours. |
| Maximum actions per review | 10 | The agent never does more than this in one review. |
| Instructions for the agent | empty | Plain-language guidance, e.g. "never block zone 123". The limits above always win. |
| Network budget | Off | Off / Advise / Auto for the network campaign's daily budget (Adsterra, ExoClick). |
| Headroom (%) | 15 | Added on top of the computed network budget. |
| Minimum / Maximum network budget | empty | Bounds, in the network's currency. |
| Segments | Off | Off / Advise / Auto for excluding losing countries, operating systems and hours (Adsterra, ExoClick). On ExoClick Auto writes them at the network; on Adsterra Auto also only proposes. |
| Minimum cost before judging a segment | 2 | A segment is never proposed on less cost than this. |
| Segment window (days) | 14 | Full days a segment is judged on, 3–28. |

Every connected network gets the report, the source controls and the agent's review.
On Bidvertiser, enter your Bidvertiser username and password next to the API key when you connect the account: Bidvertiser's API needs all three. Bidvertiser also allows only one change to a campaign's source lists or source prices per hour, so a block may wait until the next hour.
On HilltopAds, ask your HilltopAds manager to activate your API key. Until they do, HilltopAds refuses the cost, block and bid requests, and the network shows that the key has expired.
On AdRight, enter a current API token from your AdRight account as the API key. AdRight no longer accepts the older user tokens, so the network shows that the key has expired until you replace it. The same applies to ActiveRevenue: enter a current API token from your ActiveRevenue account.
On Traffic Nomads, rules can pause and resume the campaign, but costs are not imported yet: Traffic Nomads has not published a statistics API we can read, so the zone report shows estimated cost.
On AdRight, enter a current API token from your AdRight account as the API key. AdRight no longer accepts the older user tokens, so the network shows that the key has expired until you replace it.
On Clickaine, generate the API token in your Clickaine dashboard under API and enter it as the API key.
Clickadu allows 200 API calls an hour per account. Each change there takes about three calls, so when many changes are due at once, some wait for the next hour.
On MGID, enter the API token from Settings → API in the MGID dashboard as the key and your MGID Client ID (the number in the account menu) as the network user ID.
On Ad-Maven, use the API key from Profile → API Key at advertisers.ad-maven.com. The token of the old Ad-Maven panel does not work, and the network then shows that the key has expired.
On Zeropark, the zone is the target: the campaign URL at Zeropark must pass {target} (the Zeropark tracking link template does). Zeropark campaigns cannot be linked to an ad zone yet: Zeropark identifies a campaign by a long id that the link cannot store. Until that changes, the Zeropark controls in this table are not available.
Example#
Maria buys popunder traffic on Adsterra for her ad zone Sports Pops. She connects her Adsterra account, links the zone to her Adsterra campaign and adds &sid6=##PLACEMENT_ID## to the campaign URL at Adsterra. The next day Source zones shows 140 placements: most earn more than they cost, but 12 lose money on more than 5 of cost each. She sets Mode to Advise; within the hour the 12 appear under To approve with the numbers behind each one. She approves 10 and rejects 2 she wants to give another week. She also sets a Daily source spend cap of 300 and a Day budget reserve of 5%, so Adsterra stops sending traffic just before her campaigns run out of budget. A week later she switches Mode to Auto with Maximum automatic blocks per day at 10, and turns the Buying agent on in Advise mode for a daily summary.
Tips#
- Run Advise for a week before you switch anything to Auto — the proposals show you what the rules would have done.
- A zone you unblocked yourself is never blocked again by the policy or the agent.
- Put the zones you never want touched in Instructions for the agent.
- Selling on CPA or CPC? Switch How margin and CPA are judged to Confidence and lower the minimum cost. The Sure bad column then shows how close each zone is to being blocked.
- Use an estimated cost (*) as a hint, not as proof; give such zones a bit more time before blocking.
Troubleshooting#
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Every row is (no zone id) | The source zone is not on the URL at the network | Add the text from Source zone capture to the campaign URL at the network. |
| Cost is — everywhere | The network's cost is not imported yet, or the API key is wrong | Check the account on the Ad Networks page; cost arrives within an hour of a working key. |
| Source campaign shows the red "stopped" box | The network refused 10 calls in a row (often an expired API key) | Renew the key on the Ad Networks page, then click Retry. |
| Block buttons are missing | This network has no blocking API with us yet | Block the zone in the network's own panel; the report still shows which ones. |
| Proposals keep appearing for the same zone | It still loses money over the window | Approve it, or reject it — a rejected zone is not proposed again within the window. |
| The bid is never raised | No Maximum bid set, or your campaigns cannot take more traffic | Set a maximum bid; raises also need a campaign that is behind its day-budget pace. |
