Gallery Traffic: Ad Setups per Traffic Source

Applies to: Publishers · Ad manager setups only, when the network has the module switched on

Different traffic deserves different ads. A partner with a sensitive audience may need calmer ads, while visitors from search and bookmarks may need no pop-unders at all. An ad setup decides which ad zones a visitor gets, based on which partner sent them. Your pages never change: a setup swaps the zone a page asks for for another zone, or switches it off.

How a visitor is matched#

When a visitor arrives through a partner's tracking link, the panel remembers the partner and site for the rest of the visit (30 minutes after their last page). Every ad request during that visit then gets the setup for that traffic:

  1. the setup for this partner and this site,
  2. otherwise the setup for this partner on any site,
  3. otherwise the setup for any partner.

Visitors who arrive without a partner link (search, bookmarks, typed-in) get the setup marked This is the setup for visitors who arrive without a partner link. Partner traffic never falls back to that one.

With no setup that matches, every visitor sees the ads the page already asks for.

Adding a setup#

Open Publisher → Gallery Traffic → Ad setups and click Add setup.

Field What to enter
Name Your own label, for example "Sensitive partners".
This is the setup for visitors who arrive without a partner link Tick for search and bookmark visitors. The partner fields are then ignored.
Only for partner pubid (0 = any) The partner this setup applies to, or 0 for any partner.
Only for their site (0 = any) Narrow it to one of the partner's sites. Needs a pubid too.
Notes Optional, for your own reference.

Then add Zone changes, one row each: pick the zone being requested and what to show instead, another of your zones or shows nothing to switch that slot off. Zones you don't list are served as usual, so a zone you add later is never switched off by accident. A setup needs at least one zone change.

Each kind of traffic can have only one setup; the form refuses a second setup for traffic that an existing one already covers.

Tips#

  • Swap rather than switch off where you can: a calmer format still earns.
  • Pop-unders are also checked when the visitor clicks, so a pop switched off for a partner stays off even on a cached page.
  • Clicks always belong to the ad that was actually shown.
