Interstitial and full page ad zones

Applies to: Publishers

Interstitials and full page ads cover all or most of the screen for a moment — between pages or at a natural break — and then get out of the way. They are high-impact formats: they earn well per view and should be used with a sensible frequency.

Your network decides which ad zone types it offers. If Interstitial ads, the banner / native / video interstitial variants or Full page ads aren't in the type list when you create a zone, they aren't switched on for your network.

What this is#

  • Interstitial ads and Interstitial Banner — a banner of the size you pick, shown floating over the page (centred by default) with a close option.
  • Interstitial Native — the same overlay filled with native items, styled like a native zone.
  • Interstitial Video — a video ad in a floating player over the page.
  • Full page ads — a full-screen ad shown between page views: after the first few pageviews, then every few pageviews.

When you'll use this#

  • Your visitors browse several pages per visit, so an ad between pages is natural.
  • You want one high-value placement instead of several small ones.
  • Full page ads also work as the fallback for a pop zone, for visitors whose browser the pop zone blocks — see the full-page fallback in the Ad Controller article.

Settings#

Interstitials (banner, native, video)#

The banner interstitials take an Ad Size like a banner zone; the native interstitial takes the native layout settings (Image Orientation, Total Rows, Total Columns, fonts and colours). All interstitials show the Floater Settings card:

Setting What it does Default
Capping How often the interstitial may show to the same visitor: 1 minute up to 24 hours. Not set
Ad position Center, Top Left/Center/Right, Left/Right Middle or Bottom Left/Center/Right. Center
Close automatically Hide it after the number of seconds you enter. Off (15 seconds when switched on)
Top / Left / Right / Bottom margin (px) Distance from the screen edge for the chosen position. 0
Pass on external click ID + Network click ID macro Interstitial Video only: adds a click ID to the video clickthrough so a network you serve the zone through can pass its own click ID back. Off

Full page ads#

Setting What it does Default
Show first time after N pageviews Pageviews before the first full-page ad fires. 1
Repeat every N pageviews After the first one, repeat every Nth pageview. 3
Refresh Rate Minimum time before the same visitor can see it again: 1 minute up to 24 hours. Not set
Country filter Show only in, or never in, the countries you pick. All countries
Blocked browsers Browsers that never get the full-page ad. None blocked
Blocked device types Device types that never get it. None blocked

The general zone settings are covered in Ad Zones.

Getting the code#

Save the zone and copy the code from its Ad Zone Code tab; overlays position themselves, so the code can go anywhere in the page. See Getting Your Ad Code and the Ad Controller.

Selling it#

All of these accept CPM, flat-rate (direct deal) and run-of-network (RON) campaigns. Interstitial Ads, Interstitial Banner, Interstitial Video and Full page ads can also be used in Smart Zones.

Tips#

  • Cap them. One interstitial per visitor every 30–60 minutes is a common starting point; every pageview drives visitors away.
  • Don't show a full page ad on the first pageview — the default (after 1, then every 3) gives the visitor a moment first.
  • Make sure the close button is reachable on mobile; don't place overlays where your own sticky header covers them.

Troubleshooting#

Symptom Likely cause Fix
It shows too often No Capping / Refresh Rate set. Set a capping window.
It never shows Capping window not yet passed, or the visitor's country, browser or device is filtered out. Test in a private window from an allowed country and browser.
The full page ad appears on the wrong pageview Show first time / Repeat every count pageviews per visitor. Adjust both numbers; they count from the visitor's first pageview.
The banner interstitial size can't be changed The size is fixed after creation. Create a new zone with the size you need.
