A publisher who only has banner slots runs out of ways to earn more without making the page worse. An ad network that only sells banners and pops loses the publisher who wants something in between. GoAdserver now serves a full set of newer web formats: ads that reveal themselves as the reader scrolls, sit on images, wait for the moment a visitor leaves, or pay the visitor for watching. Almost all of them are options of the ad zone types you already know, and they all load through the same goCtrl ad tag.

Formats that work with the reader's scroll
- Interscroller: switch on Show as interscroller on an inline banner zone and the banner sits fixed behind a window in your content, about 80% of the screen high, revealed as the reader scrolls past. An "Advertisement" bar above and below makes clear what it is. Tall sizes such as 300x600 or 320x480 suit it best.
- In-image: Show in-image puts the banner in a closeable strip over the bottom of large images in your articles, up to three a page, each once it scrolls into view. The image's alt text or caption is sent along, so advertisers can target it with keywords.
- Infinite content feed: a Native Ads zone can become a feed of cards under your article that keeps loading as the reader scrolls, with ads between your own articles.
Sticky ads, side rails and anchors
Interstitial ads and floating banners now have an Anchor option: a full-width strip across the bottom (or top) of the screen, the banner centred, with a tab to collapse it. A screen-width range decides where an ad appears at all, which gives you side rails on wide screens (left or right middle, at least 1200 px) and a phone-only anchor (at most 768 px) from the same zone settings.
Anchors and floaters can also refresh: a new banner every 30 seconds to 5 minutes, counted only while the ad is really visible on screen. Each new banner is a new impression.
Interruptions that respect the visitor
- Vignette: a full-page ad set to Links to this site only shows between two of your own pages. Visitors leaving for another site are never interrupted, and links that open a new tab, jump within the page, start an email or a call, or download a file never trigger it.
- Exit intent: banner and native interstitials can open only when the visitor is about to leave. On a computer that is the mouse moving towards the tab bar or back button; on a phone, a quick scroll back up after reading at least a screen. Never in the first 5 seconds on the page.
Both keep the capping and pageview rules of the interstitial and full-page zones, so you decide how often anyone sees them.
Native that fits any page
Native Ads zones now come with ready-made layouts and a live preview above the code: cards, a sidebar list, image tiles, a news-feed row, sponsored links without images, or unstyled for your own CSS. Every layout follows the zone's rows and columns and works on phones, so a publisher no longer has to design native ads to use them.
The on-page notification unit has new styles too. Set it to Chat message, Incoming call or System notification and it becomes a social bar: the ad looks like a new message, a call with answer and decline buttons, or an app alert.
Ads your visitors choose to see
- Rewarded video: tick Rewarded ad on a video zone and the code becomes a "Watch a short ad to unlock" button. The visitor watches the video in exchange for an article, a download or a game life. The ad server confirms the reward with a signed token, and can call your own server directly, so you never have to trust the browser.
- Offerwall: an offer zone can run as a grid of offers on your own page, shown per visitor country and sorted by payout. Your visitor picks an offer, and when it converts a postback tells your server who to credit, in coins, credits or whatever unit you use.
HTML5 rich media and in-text links
Advertisers can upload HTML5 banners as the .zip their design tool exported. The size is read from the banner itself when it is set there, and the standard clickTag counts the click and sends it on to the ad's destination, so most "IAB / clickTag" exports work as they are.
In-text ads, where the most frequent words of an article become underlined ad links with a small card, are available on request.
How to start
- Create an ad zone, or open an existing one, and pick the type: banner for interscroller and in-image, interstitial or full page for anchors, side rails, exit intent and vignettes, native for layouts and the content feed, video for rewarded.
- Switch on the option on the zone's Settings tab and save.
- Copy the zone code again from the Code tab. Several of these options load a different plugin, so the old code keeps the old behaviour.
Each format's settings are in the manual: banner ad zones, interstitial and full page ad zones, native ad zones, video ad zones and offers and the offerwall. To see them running before you create anything, every format has a live demo page.
Which types appear in the Type dropdown is up to each network: an ad network or an ad management setup switches on the formats it wants to sell. The full list is on the ad formats page, and our team can tell you which ones suit your traffic.
