Email Display Ads

Email display ads put banner ads into a newsletter with a few lines of HTML. The ad is picked when the email is opened, not when it is sent, so an issue read next week still shows a running campaign, and every reader’s click goes to the ad they saw.

How email display ads work

The publisher pastes the zone’s code into the email template once. Each ad slot is a plain image and link on the ad server, with the email tool’s per-recipient merge tag in the address. When a reader opens the email, the image is requested: the ad server picks a current banner, counts the impression and remembers the choice for that reader.

  • Picked on open: every issue shows the campaigns running at the moment it is read.
  • One ad per reader: opening the email again shows the same ad and is not counted twice.
  • The click follows the ad: the link sends the reader to the ad they saw; with images switched off, the ad is chosen at the click.

Works in every email program

Nothing runs inside the email: it carries only images and links, so it shows in Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail and every other client. The zone serves the image banners of the campaigns that fit its size, from one to six slots per email, each its own ad. Use a recipient id as the merge tag, never the email address.

For publishers and networks

Newsletter publishers earn from every send without selling each issue by hand. On your own ad platform, email display is one more zone type for your publishers: the same banner campaigns, targeting and reports as on the web, and the zone’s settings and code are in the API as well.

More ad formats

Email display ads are one of many formats you can run from one platform. Browse them all on the ad formats page, or try each one on the live demo pages.
