Email display ads: banners picked on open

Put banner ads into your newsletter with a few lines of HTML. The ad is chosen when the email is opened, so an issue read next week still shows a running campaign.

Each reader keeps the ad they saw, and their click goes to it. More on email display ads.

DEMO

A newsletter with two ad slots

This is the newsletter as a reader sees it. Each slot is the zone's real code: an image and a link on the ad server. The image is picked at the moment the email is opened, here when this page loads, for your reader id. Press Open the email again: the same ads come back and the open is not counted twice. Be a new reader gives you a new id and a fresh pick. A click on an ad goes to the ad you saw (here: our demo landing page).

Five autumn trails worth the early alarm

The leaves are turning and the crowds are gone. This week we picked five day hikes that are at their best between now and the first snow, from an easy lakeside loop to a ridge walk with a proper scramble at the end.

1. The lakeside loop. Nine flat kilometres, two cafés and a boathouse that rents canoes until the end of the month. Bring a flask; the north shore gets the morning sun.

2. The beech ridge. A steady climb through copper woods to a viewpoint over three valleys. Go early on a weekday and you will have it to yourself.

Next week: how to pack a day bag that weighs under four kilos, and the one layer we never leave at home.

HOW

How it works

Nothing runs inside the email: it only carries plain images and links, so it works in every email program.

/mailad.go · act=img on open · act=click on a click

1 · Your email tool fills the tagEvery recipient gets their own image and link address, with their id in place of the merge tag (for example *|UNIQID|*).
2 · The open picks the adWhen the email is opened, the image is requested. The ad server picks a current banner, counts the impression and remembers the choice for that reader.
3 · Re-opens stay the sameOpening the email again shows the same ad and is not counted again, for 7 days by default.
4 · The click follows the adThe link sends the reader to the ad they saw. With images off, the ad is picked at the click.
NOTES

Good to know

Email programs show images only: the zone serves image banners and skips HTML or video ones. Gmail and Apple Mail load images through their own servers, so the country of an open is often the country of those servers, and Apple Mail may load images before the email is read. Use a recipient id as the merge tag, never the email address.
