Interscroller Ads
An interscroller ad is a tall banner shown through a window in your content. The banner stays fixed to the screen while the article scrolls over it, so the window opens on the ad as the reader scrolls down and closes again as they move on. For a moment the ad has the whole screen, without covering the page or stopping the reader.
In GoAdserver an interscroller is an ordinary banner zone with one switch turned on. Try the live interscroller demo.
How an interscroller ad works
You place the zone code between two paragraphs of an article. The code builds a window there, about four fifths of the screen high, with a small Advertisement label above and below it. The banner itself is pinned to the screen behind that window. As the reader scrolls, the text slides over the banner: first the bottom of the ad shows, then all of it, then the window passes and the article continues.
Nothing about the page layout changes and nothing covers the content, so readers keep scrolling at their own pace. It is the same banner you already sell on the ad formats page, served in a way that takes a full screen of attention.
Why publishers use it
- One placement that fills the screen on a phone, where a normal banner is small.
- No pop-up, no overlay and no close button to hunt for: the reader simply scrolls past.
- Tall creatives that advertisers already have, such as 300 × 600 half-page banners, get a stage that suits them.
- It counts and reports like any banner zone: impressions, clicks and earnings per zone and per site.
Which ads fill it
An interscroller zone is a banner zone of a fixed size, so any banner campaign of that size fills it: CPM, flat-rate deals and run-of-network campaigns. No special creative is needed. Tall sizes work best, such as 300 × 600 or 320 × 480; the window is taller than the banner, so the reader always sees all of it on the way past.
Set it up
- Create an inline banner zone in a tall size, for example 300 × 600.
- Turn on Show as interscroller in the zone settings and save.
- Copy the zone code again: it now loads the interscroller instead of the plain banner.
- Place it between two paragraphs of your article, in the main column rather than a narrow sidebar.
In the code you can set window_height, the height of the window as a share of the screen (40 to 100, default 80), and advertise, the label text. The zone settings are described in the documentation on banner ad zones. The switch is also in the public API: banner_settings.interscroller set to true, and the code endpoint returns the interscroller code, so you can set zones up from your own tools.
When to use an interscroller
- Long articles, guides and reviews where readers scroll through a lot of text.
- Mobile traffic, where a full-screen moment is worth more than a small banner.
- Sites that want more from a page without adding pop-ups or more ad slots.
Publishers who run their own sites or a network of them set it per zone; see the publisher ad server for how zones, sites and reports fit together.
See it live
The interscroller demo runs a real zone on a demo account inside a sample travel article. Scroll slowly past it to see the window open and close on the banner; the page also shows the zone’s code. More formats are on the live demo pages.
