AI Chat Ads: Ads Under Your Assistant's Answers

More and more people ask an AI assistant instead of typing into a search box. That conversation says very clearly what someone is looking for, and until now there was no clean way to put an ad next to it. GoAdserver now serves AI chat ads: a clearly labelled ad under an assistant's answer, matched on what the visitor asked and what the assistant replied. It works in a chat widget on a website with the normal ad tag, and in any app through a small JSON interface.

How it works

A visitor asks the assistant a question. When the answer has finished, the question plus the start of the answer is looked up the way a search would be. Campaigns whose keywords match are candidates, and the winner appears under the answer with the label the publisher chose, such as Sponsored.

  • The ad never interrupts the answer: it only appears once the answer is complete.
  • The impression counts when at least half of the card is on screen, not when it is requested.
  • Clicks go through the ad server, so clicks and conversions are tracked like any other ad.
  • The publisher decides how often: an ad under every answer, or under every 2nd, 3rd or later answer.

Three kinds of ad under an answer

A chat zone can show its ads in different ways, set per zone:

  • An ad card: image, title, short description and the advertiser's address.
  • A row of product cards: two to four products with image, name and price. Advertisers fill them from a product feed, so every product in stock becomes an ad with its current price.
  • Sponsored follow-up questions: an advertiser can add one follow-up question to an ad, for example Which Paris hotels include breakfast? It shows as a labelled chip under the answer. When the visitor picks it, the assistant is asked that question, and the pick counts as the ad's click. The zone shows zero, one or two of them per answer.

The follow-up question and the price are two plain fields on the ad, next to the title and description, so advertisers set them up in the ad form or through the API.

Safe by default

Both the question and the answer are checked against the built-in blocked-term list before an ad is picked. Conversations about minors, non-consent, violence and similar topics never get an ad, in many languages and including disguised spellings. Each publisher can add their own words on top, for example to keep ads away from medical or financial advice. The check runs on the ad server, so it applies to the website widget and to apps alike.

For chat widgets and for apps

On a website, the goCtrl ad tag watches the chat widget. The publisher enters three CSS selectors (the message list, the answer bubbles and the visitor's messages) and pastes the zone code next to the widget. Nothing to install on the server, and the chat itself is not changed.

In an app without a web page, such as a mobile app, a voice assistant or a messenger bot, the app calls the ad server with the visitor's question, optionally the answer, and how many ads it wants (one to four). It gets JSON back: title, description, display address, image, click address, impression address and the label, plus the follow-up question and price where the advertiser set them. The app passes the visitor's IP address and browser, so country and device targeting see the person, not the app's server. The impression is only counted when the app reports that the ad was shown.

One campaign, three places

AI chat ads are a mode of the Search Ads zone. An advertiser buys one keyword-targeted Search Ads campaign and reaches people in a publisher's search box, in in-text links inside articles and in AI chat answers, with the same keywords, bids and reports. Each question is recorded in the stats as the zone's sub-ID, so publishers can see which topics earn.

Try it and set it up

The live AI chat ads demo shows a chat with real ad cards, product rows and follow-up chips served by the ad server. To run it yourself:

  1. Create an ad zone of the type Search Ads and set Where the ads show to AI chat. If Search Ads is not in the type list, the platform operator switches it on first.
  2. Enter the chat selectors, choose the ad style, how often an ad shows and the label.
  3. Copy the code from the zone's Code tab, or the JSON address for an app.

The step-by-step guide is in the manual: Search Ads, and for product rows Product Feeds. Every other format is on the ad formats page, and publishers running their own inventory will find the rest on the publisher ad server page.
