Trail notes

Ten things to pack for an autumn day hike

1 · A shell

Wind on the ridge feels ten degrees colder. A light shell weighs less than a sandwich.

2 · A hat

Most of the warmth you lose goes through your head.

3 · Water

Half a litre per hour of walking, more if you climb.

4 · Poles

They save your knees on the way down.

5 · A headlamp

Autumn days end early. Pack one even for a short hike.

6 · Broken-in boots

Never new ones on a long day.

7 · Something hot

A flask of tea at the summit is half the reason to go.

8 · A small stove

For the longer routes: soup beats a cold sandwich.

9 · A plan B

Know where the next station is, and when the last train leaves.
